The Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation (GNF) is a company which discovers new medicines that address most demanding medical needs. GNF applies integrated state-of-the-art technologies in chemistry, biology, automation, and information sciences to identify new biological processes and disease-relevant mechanisms and develop new therapeutics in a variety of areas, including cancer biology, cardiovascular/metabolism, immunology, respiratory disease, neuroscience and infectious disease.
Scott Freeman, the security coordinator at GNF, was given three months timeline to design a long term storage system for the facility wide video surveillance system in on its vast campus located in a 260,000 square foot research center. Scott got advice from Nathan Chavez at Alarms Unlimited in San Diego to exam Enhance Technology’s UltraStor RS8 IP-4 professional IP SAN storage solution to tackle their immediate and ever-growing storage needs.
“I was recommended to use UltraStor RS8 IP4 from Enhance Technology due to its flexibility, performance, and durability.” said Scott Freeman, GNF’s security coordinator.”
In order to proof the performance of Enhance’s UltraStor RS8 IP-4, Scott did a through testing for compatibility, interoperability, reliability & performance. He stated that he ran 60 cameras into the storage array, stored and recalled videos from it. He found out that the setup has performed even better than was promised. As a result, when GNF sought to upgrade, he did not even think twice but was looking to Enhance for the permanent solution.
“During the 30 months we have had this array; we have experienced two power surges. No only did I not experience any data loss, the drives rebuilt themselves and kept right on functioning.”
“Due to the fact that they are recording digital videos, this array is running in a high throughout 24/7. However, it has never let us down a single time, and it requires almost no maintenance!”
Overall, Scott talked about his experience with Enhance by pointing out that the UltraStor RS8 IP-4 is better-quality to any other product he has encountered because of its ease of setup, its very reasonably price, durability, and functionality. Scott even uses the storage array to remotely monitor a facility since the camera data is treated as internet data by the Avigilon software.
“It’s really quite nice…this has been an outstanding choice” said Scott.
The Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation (GNF), founded in 1999 and now with over 560 employees, is under the umbrella of the Novartis Institute for Biomedical Research (NIBR) and is affiliated with the Novartis Institute for Developing World Medical Research (NIDWMR). The mission of GNF is to discover new medicines that address unmet medical need.
The Institute, located in a 260,000 square foot research center on the Torrey Pines Mesa, is funded through the Novartis Research Foundation, which provides GNF the operational freedom to initiate and conduct research programs while maintaining broad collaboration and alignment with the entire Novartis research organization. This relationship has allowed GNF to develop a unique environment and accompanying technological infrastructure not found in any university or commercial pharmaceutical setting.
