NewBay Media Combines EnhanceBOX E8 MS and RocketRAID 3522
to Create the Ultimate DIY (Do-it-Yourself) RAID

The Challenge

Ned Soltz, of NewBay Media, has a lot of experience with RAIDs. “Over the past several years, I’ve build RAIDs, utilized several in production and reviewed turnkey systems from several major vendors,” Ned states in DV Magazine. Ned also knows the importance of redundancy and was looking to evaluate the functionality of RAID with a RocketRAID 3522 card to create the ultimate high performance and high capacity RAID 5 for HD video work. Fortunately, the first enclosure that Ned was recommended was Enhance Technology’s own E8 MS.

Enhance Technology becomes a key part of the solution

Ned was looking for an enclosure that not only had MiniSAS connectors for reliability but also a quiet enclosure. After speaking with a rep from Enhance Technology as well as a recommendation from HighPoint Technology, Ned decided to take on the E8 MS for his project. Along with the E8 MS, Ned’s system used with the E8 MS was a Mac Pro, Dual 3.2 -8-core; RocketRAID 3522; Decklink Multibridge Pro; Final Cut Studio. The setup of the E8 MS was easy for Ned. There were no hassles and everything worked flawlessly for him. He found the setup of the E8 MS simple and hassle-free. Ned said “this is the last RAID I’m going to build (for a while) since I’ve finally built the Ultimate RAID.”

The Design

The E8 MS is a desktop storage device designed to support SAS and SATA I/II and features Mini-SAS. “Very smooth,” Ned says. “Pop in the drives and everything works,” He adds. “See my article in the August DV Magazine.”

“I chose the E8-MS Enhance enclosure for this test because this new device supports either SATA or SAS drives, it is a plug-and-play solution, it has the option of a redundant power supply, it is quiet and its 4-channel miniSAS connectors are more secure than eSATA connectors. But most important, at $650 including cables, it represented an excellent value.”

Constructed with aluminum material and hot-swappable cooling fan, the E8 MS is the coolest storage system on the market with a host of hot-swap components, empowering users with capabilities normally found in enterprise-class SCSI systems.

Ned noted that not only did the E8 MS solve his problem but also that it “worked better than we expected!”
